mystery tapes

bought myself a red balloon

got a blue surprise.

I have been holding onto some 7 inch reel to reel tapes that I plucked from my father's trailer when he died. my dad was an amateur country singer and I hoped that there would be recordings of his music, as, I remembered him having a tape recorder back when I was a teenager at Newport News High School.

I have recently bought a Sears reel to reel tape recorder at a local thrift store but had struggled with being able to find a blank reel/take-up. It came with no reels or speakers. I remembered the old Fostex unit has a metal reel, so, yesterday, after I picked up my son, Aaron; we found some wonderful blueberries at the Wake Forest farmer's market and had taken full advantage of them, decided to check out both the old musty crackly brittle reels that I had rescued from my father's death residence and crank up the tape drive for the first time, and were astounded to find that, yes indeed, there WERE old recordings of my dad...3-4 songs in total over 5 or 6 tapes. I had hoped for more but these are unlikely treasures to cherish. I will be trying to transctibe them into digital format. first, because it's my father doing what he loved, and, secondly because my father was a knockout country singer.

It was fun sharing a little bit of my father with my son even if it's just old bits of tape.
